An active ultrasonic sonotrode drives the thermoplastic element into the bone   Shearing forces at the contact face of the polymer cause it to liquefy and penetrate into the pore space.

The polymer cools rapidly, resulting in a stable joint after only a few seconds.

The BoneWelding® Technology

The BoneWelding® concept is a unique platform technology orginally developed in the early 1990's for wood joining applications. Since then, it has been successfully applied to a variety of medical implant sectors. Numerous in-vivo and in-vitro studies have been executed in cooperation with WoodWelding's (SportWelding's licensor) licensees that demonstrate biocompatibilty, superior biomechanical stability and accelerated osseointegration for various, fully polymeric and load bearing titanium implants.

Publications

Multiple clinical and pre-clinical studies have been conducted to prove clinical performance, biocompatibility, osseointegration, and stability of the BoneWelding® process. For more information see our publications.
